Expressing your voice as a leader

Last week I was recovering from a summer flu I had for over a week. I guess being around 20,000 tweens at VidCon will do that to you.

I felt so much guilt having to cancel calls and not record my latest episode intro for the podcast. I felt like I was letting my team and clients down.

I’m usually great at slowing down and resting, but when your body forces you to slow down at unexpected times, the resistance kicks in…

“This is bad timing. I have so much to get done. I’m going to be so behind. Why now?!”

As a leader, you feel responsible to take care of everybody. But it's important you take care of yourself too. Leaders need to be held too.

I truly had to surrender even when I didn't want to.

When the rest of the world is moving so fast, is there a part of you that knows it’s time to slow down, surrender, tune in, and listen?

It’s one of my favorite parts of what Pamela shares in today’s episode. She talks about listening as a leader. I think it’s a powerful practice as leaders. Not just listening to our community, our customers, our team, but also ourselves.

Expressing Your Voice as a Leader

“True leadership is acting on what it is that you know to be true.”

– PAM SLIM

Pamela Slim is the bestselling author of Escape from Cubicle Nation and Body of Work Finding the Thread That Ties Your Story Together.

She’s a small business coach who advises very large companies on how to understand and connect with small business owners today. She is frequently quoted as a business expert in press such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Forbes.

In episode 121 of Lead with Love, Pam shares the perspective on leadership she gained from her time in the corporate world –– including why leadership is a choice. We also talk about…

  • what motivated her to journey from her corporate job to entrepreneurship and tips she has for others looking to make that leap
  • what she’s learned over the years of building communities and how she is now practicing this in her local community
  • the biggest challenges she faced in opening a brick and mortar business, and
  • why we shouldn’t play small or hesitate to share our opinions
